2021 Bridge Conference: Full Schedule

Now in its 19th year, School’s Out Washington’s annual Bridge Conference brings together school-age care providers, youth development professionals, leaders, community organizers, funders, and policy makers from across the country.

Attendees hear from thought-provoking presenters and learn new strategies to build strong programs and equitable systems for young people, in and out of school. Reflected in all aspects of the Bridge Conference are the values of equity, belonging, leadership, nourishment, change, innovation, and community. Our attendees and presenters represent the diverse communities we work with across the state. In 2021, for our second virtual conference, we will come together to celebrate, influence, and learn in community with the expanded learning field.

We gather to:

Engage with a diverse range of knowledge, people, and perspectives
Identify the ways that racial inequities impact youth, expanded learning opportunities, and educational outcomes
Experience a sense of belonging to nourish social connection and professional networking
Learn how to implement tangible practices that promote an equitable expanded learning opportunity ecosystem
Strive to recognize power dynamics throughout programs and systems and begin to strategize how to co-create stronger partnerships across sectors

2021 Bridge: From Seedlings to Stardust
Across time and cultures, humans have found comfort, guidance, and knowledge amongst the stars. Before we had the technology to tell us what was out there, we were grounded and deeply connected to this unknown we reached for it. The stars can be said to be our first home, the first dreamscape of humankind. We have only just begun our rupture – the shattering and deconstruction of—individual and collective realities. This change has brought exhaustion—with no clear path in sight. Yet, we cannot stifle ourselves in normalcy. 2021 Bridge: From Seedlings to Stardust dares us to dream and to pour into the tenaciousness of transformation. The seeds have been sown—now, how do we shape this change?

Systems Leader Cohort
For 2021, the Systems Leader Cohort will include a Pre-Conference on October 26 and a series of recommended workshops for funders, policymakers, and community leaders. This cohort will focus on advancing equity through a well-supported expanded learning system in this profound moment of change.

Systems Leaders Pre-Conference

Join us for an interactive full morning (9-12 a.m. Pacific Standard Time) pre-conference to envision a future in Washington that harnesses this moment of unprecedented opportunity for systemic change in our sector as we begin to emerge from the pandemic. Seeds that have been planted over the past decade have really taken root over the past 18 months, growth that could result in a thriving and more equitable ecosystem of expanded learning opportunities for our young people. However, the ecosystem is still fragile. We must tend the soil, care for new growth, and prune what’s not serving us. Come learn about these growing opportunities and help us to envision a thriving ecosystem. We will begin by grounding us in what expanded learning system building has looked like in Washington State and invite you to share your part of the story. We will then hear about local, regional and statewide system building efforts that need to be tended. Using breakout groups and interactive virtual tools, you will have a chance to share your vision and commitment to building this ecosystem. We will end with an inspirational closing that will set you up to engage with the rest of the Bridge Conference over the following days.

Circle Time Magazine: Big Kids Edition - Episode 2: Social Emotional Learning

Circle Time Magazine is a unique professional development series that offers a web-based talk show, magazine, and online resources with each episode. This season we’re partnering with School’s Out Washington to look at quality teaching practices with an expanded age range. We’ll be especially focused on school-age children, and discuss practical strategies for working with children ages birth to 12 years old. In this workshop we will have a facilitated viewing and group discussions for Episode 2: Social Emotional Learning. We’ll be focusing on the social emotional learning (SEL) skills of self-awareness, social awareness, and relationship skills. We’ll talk about why it is important for children and adults to be aware of themselves and be aware of others. We’ll be exploring all of this in context of anti-racist and culturally responsive teaching.

Designing Our Own Learning: Disrupting power dynamics and invigorating student voice and power

Youth and adult educators (middle and high school) will share learning from working together over 3 years in a summer institute. You’ll engage in an immersive experience trying out some of the tools, strategies and activities that have brought about profound transformation in the presenters and their schools. The session will be structured to mirror and model the structure of the summer institute to provide an authentic opportunity for learning and understanding. Our session, will be holistic, interactive, decolonized, and rooted in values of love, belonging, reflection, and storytelling. You will leave with a different sense of what is possible. Holding Change: The Power of Collective Healing in Movement Leadership

Do you have the skills to recognize grief and have the resources to respond?

Holding space for collectives experiencing grief and loss due to historical, intergenerational, persistent institutional or personal trauma requires a unique skill set, knowledge base and emotional resilience.

This responsibility comes with the wisdom that collective and individual healing are not separate; they work as an interdependent system fueled by intentional action that we cannot do alone or in silos. During this enlightenment session, participants will learn about the effects of unrecognized collective trauma and examine how we may have individually participated in the collective trauma of our culture. We will also explore the depths of our radical imaginations to uncover how Expanded Learning Program spaces become a vehicle to transform and metabolize grief into an agency.

Roles and Boundaries for Social Change – Building Collaboration Within our Ecosystems

In this workshop, we'll dive into Deepa Iyer's Social Change Ecosystem. This framework can help individuals, networks, and organizations assess and align values, strengths, and areas of growth within a team or community. The target audience for this workshop is anyone who wants to learn more about the social change map, especially those working in collaborative and diverse teams.

We'll talk about the roles we play in our ecosystems and our role(s) in social change. We hope that using this framework, along with having candid conversations about boundaries and the complexities of relationships, will serve youth development professionals in their work with students and beyond. Participants will engage in self-reflection, learn from their peers, and walk away with a tool for assessing community needs and strengths, decision-making, and boundary-setting while centering collaboration and well-being.

Shaping Stories to Shift Systems: The Youth Storytellers Project

To center community and lead with anti-racist action, we need to reimagine who “experts” are, resource young people of color to own their stories, and follow their visions of transformation. In this session, learn about the Road Map Youth Storytellers Project, which has collaborated with young leaders to create communications projects that advocate for change. Participants will engage with frameworks of narrative strategy, project-based learning, and community connection. Through five specific youth-led projects, particularly with storytelling about two of them on food justice in schools and disability support policies, participants will learn how systems change needs to be driven by community stories. “Gramma Loves Star Wars!”: Families and students learn together at home

When school closed in 2020, ALTERA pivoted to make students’ homes their extended learning space. Because of inadequate internet we activated face-to-face daily learning opportunities with parents and siblings as teachers and co-learners engaged in home-centered, place-based and culturally responsive learning activities relevant to rural Eastern Washington Hispanic, Caucasian and Native American agricultural families. A panel of six Altera Site Directors from elementary and secondary settings share specific tools and student feedback that will inform participants in innovative practices with: learning through place-based themes; celebrating students’ unique home settings; academic content enmeshed with social emotional supports; student voice via visual and oral storytelling; tracking and measuring in-home learning through choice boards and family interviews; sustaining student engagement through text, ZOOM and social media; and elevating the role of multimodal literacies to diversify access to literacy experiences, from family reading to the backyard night sky.

Advocacy 101: Using Your Voice to Impact Public Policy

Public policy and funding advocacy for issues impacting children and youth is always difficult – especially for the expanded learning and youth development field. However, the COVID crisis has provided a growing public and policymaker knowledge of the purpose and importance of this field. Additionally, a new joint advocacy effort between a variety of organizations across the whole-child support spectrum is showing impact – and fast. Co-presented with members of Seattle’s Youth Commission, this session will lead participants on how to civically engage youth through planning development processes. Utilizing Harts' Ladder of Youth Participation, program and policy leads will learn how to create a framework that integrates youth through critical steps of their planning and development processes. The operational goal of the workshop is to teach participants how to "ASK" Awareness, Structure, and Knowledge. "A" = Awareness, often times adults are not aware of the youth groups they have access to nor have they full awareness of how their practices are exclusionary of youth voice, implicit or explicit. Putting Data to Work for Young People: Community-Wide Use of Data for Equitable Systems

This session will support system leaders in their data collection efforts and knowing what to measure and how to use data in real time to drive system change, quality improvement and positive outcomes for youth. Participants will learn why it's so essential to collect data, common challenges, how we can use data to advance racial equity goals, and promising practices, including data simulations and data scenarios. We will introduce the *updated* Every Hour Counts Measurement Framework and accompanying Guidebook, tools to help communities set a shared vision and process for using data for improvement. Erik Skold from Sprockets, St Paul and Lisa Gomi Hui from Boston After School & Beyond will provide citywide practitioner perspectives to guide this discussion and participant's data journey. Advancing Equity in Out-of-School Time Settings through Youth Focus Groups

This interactive session invites direct service staff/volunteers, managers, and evaluators to engage in participatory, youth-focused research techniques and to begin thinking expansively about involving youth in program design and improvement.
This session includes an interactive, skill-building exercise on how to conduct focus groups with youth that aim to identify contexts and barriers affecting accessibility, belonging, and inclusion within out-of-school time programs. Participants will learn methods for engaging young people in conversations about equity and methods for implementing youth feedback into programs. Participants will also understand how story board drawings can be used to interpret youth perspectives related to equity.
There will be an opportunity for reflection and discussion at the end of the session.

School shootings dominate the conversation regarding gun violence in America, but suicide, domestic violence, interpersonal violence, unintentional shootings, and police violence are far more common. More common is the years of gun violence in our black and brown communities, which have been ignored due to Gun Violence Prevention being a white-led movement. We will dive deep into the types of gun violence related to America's youth, emphasizing communities most vulnerable, what solutions exist to combat this public health crisis, and how young people can emerge as gun violence prevention leaders. This session hopes to give a new lens to gun violence disparities and offer a civil vs. criminal approach to solutions.

Equitable Family Engagement in Out-of-School Time Programs

This workshop, for OST program and administrative staff (K-12), will provide an introduction to the power and possibilities of partnering with families in out-of-school programming, particularly for those students furthest from educational justice. While we know that kids do better in school when families are engaged, and after school programs are more successful when families are involved, it is often challenging to know where to begin to ensure that family engagement is authentic and equitable, not just a way to fulfill a requirement. We will dive into this work together and provide time to process in small groups. The goal is that you will leave the session with an understanding of equitable family engagement and its importance in OST, as well as concrete actions you can take back to your own program to develop your family engagement strategy.

Our Voices: Transforming Community Ties, Ruptures and Molds (Spanish)

Join us to hear from a community panel of latinx professionals that work with young people, women, and families to better preserve, decolonize and revitalize the wellbeing of our communities. During this panel of professionals, we’ll discuss lived experiences, dynamics, and themes that impact our latinx youth, including suicide, femicide, family, health, and community wellbeing. We will hear stories about the work, triumphs and strategies that are being implemented throughout our state to not only preserve, but also to revitalize traditions with the goal of healing and giving voice to our communities.

This session will be facilitated in Spanish. There will interpretation offered in English through Zoom Webinar. Closed captioning will not be provided in this session.

Shifting Power in the Out of School Setting: Creating space for authentic youth agency

How do we create spaces from which young people leave feeling more connected to themselves and others and with a deep sense that they matter? How do we work together to grow a deep sense of trust and respect? This requires taking a careful look at what kinds of assumptions leaders bring into the space and intentional skill building for adults and youth together. This workshop will introduce participants to strategies for creating strong learning communities that heal instead of harm. We’ll play with ideas then practice. We’ll also model structured community circles and identify skills necessary for success. You will leave hopeful about creating spaces for student voice and agency because you will have practical tools for building a stronger community and sharing power. Join us if you are a program leader, program staff or youth leader and you want to move into a new way of leading.

Unlearning Ableism for Educators

This session is designed to support participants' understanding of what ableism is, how it shows up in classroom settings, and how they can challenge ableism in their practices. We will explore such topics as TL Lewis' working definition of ableism and consider the medical vs. social models of disability. It is possible that participants may experience discomfort during or after the presentation as we learn how we have perpetuated ableism ourselves. Discomfort is a normal experience as part of growth and the (un)learning process. We will conclude with exploring a number of tangible, active strategies that educators can use to counter ableism. Specifically this workshop will support direct service staff, educators, administration, and other leaders who can influence policy and practice changes.
